How Savita Bhabhi filled the gap

One of the most unexpected compliments I have ever received regarding the graphic comic Savita Bhabhi is from a woman who thanked me for showing Savita reaching an orgasm in every episode. The reason for her gratitude was obvious and I am willing to wager that many husbands, after reading Savita Bhabhi, have asked their wives about female orgasm and how they can help them reach it. Reading the results of the India Today Group-MDRA 2013 sex survey that show almost 80 per cent of women having had an orgasm "always" or "mostly", I would like to believe that Savita Bhabhi has had a small role in bridging the gap between sexual needs of men and women. I personally do not think the Indian woman has changed all that much since 2003. However, it's now more acceptable for a woman to speak openly about her sexual needs and desires. While I am not privy to the evening chai sessions between groups of Indian women, I am of the belief that discussions about sex and one's latest conquest are not only the domain of the young Indian man anymore. I always did think that Savita Bhabhi would be popular with women, simply because it does away with the generalisation of women's sexuality and shows a strong woman who is confident and enjoys her own sexuality. In a survey we ran a year back, we were not surprised to find that 30 per cent of our readers were women. While I have to confess 'women's lib' was not top of the agenda while creating Savitabhabhi.com-it slowly metamorphosed into a graphic novel with the woman on top! Once we started getting feedback from women readers, we realised that this was an ideal platform to educate Indian men that women have sexual needs too. For me, a lot of this change has got to do with India's opening up to the world's cultures via the Internet. It's not only women who now have more access to information about sex and experimentation thereof, but their male partners too have a better understanding and acceptance of a woman's sexual persona. A lot of critics say Savita Bhabhi objectifies women. Quite the contrary. What we are trying to show via Savita Bhabhi is that sex isn't only something a man wants from a woman. It's a twoway street-women need pleasure as much as men. If we can get this through to at least 50 per cent of our readers, you will see a whole lot more of happy women in India ;-) For every critic who screams wolf, we have ten others, mostly women, who praise Savita Bhabhi for the message of sexual liberation of woman that it portrays. In my opinion, the main cause of this sexual liberation is the restructuring of the balance of power between Indian men and women. The Indian woman of 2013 is now more powerful and independent, which in turns leads her to be more open about her own sexuality. With access to the Internet and other sources of information, we can expect this trend to continue with Indian women getting more liberated in all aspects of life, including sex. She now defines her own role in the bedroom, or whichever other setting she wishes to do the nookie in.
